아이들을 위해 영어로 된 책을 찾을 때 가장 많이, 또는 처음에 접하게 되는 자료가 2007년 미국 교사협회(NEA)에서 발표한 "교사들이 선정한 아이들을 위한 100권의 책(Teachers’ Top 100 Books for Children)"이 아닌가 생각됩니다. 책 목록이 오래 되어 새로 나온 책들은 포함되어 있지 않지만, 여전히 많이 읽히고 있는 좋은 책들로 저도 처음 책을 찾아볼때 많은 도움을 받았습니다. 그리고, 또하나 재미있는 자료는 1999년 11월부터 2000년 1월까지 온라인 설문조사를 통해 만들어진 아이들이 직접 선정한 책 100권 (Kids’ Top 100 Books) 목록입니다. 이 목록도 미국 교사협회(NEA) 웹사이트에 게시되어 있었습니다. 현재는 두 차트 모두 링크로 들어가지지 않는 것을 보니 삭제되었거나. 업데이트 중인 것으로 보입니다.
이전까지는 교사들이 추천하는 책을 위주로 읽혀왔는데, 아이들은 어떤 책을 좋아하는지 궁금해서 이 두 목록을 비교해보았습니다. (책 이미지는 www.amazon.com에서 가져왔습니다.)
먼저 두차트에 공통적으로 들어가 있는 30권의 책입니다.
만 3살정도 유아들에게 읽어줄 수 있는 그림책으로 Good Night Moon(잘자요 달님)과 Love You Forever(언제까지나 너를 사랑해), 만 4살전후 프리스쿨 아이들의 책으로 The Mitten(털장갑- 이 책의 저자인 잰 브랫은 교사들이 Jan Brett's Book 이라는 이름으로 따로 추천할 정도로 사랑받고 있는 작가입니다. ), Tikki Tikki Tembo, 그림책의 고전이라 할 수 있는 Where the Wild Things Are(괴물들이 사는 나라), The Polar Express(북극으로 가는 기차)를 공통으로 선정했습니다.
글을 읽기시작하는 킨더(유치원/5살) 시기에는 특유의 개성있는 삽화와 함께 영어 단어의 라임과 운율을 느끼기에 좋은 책들인, Dr. Seuss(닥터수스)의 책 5권(Hop on Pop / The Cat in the Hat / One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish / Green Eggs and Ham/ How the Grinch Stole Christmas)과 Shel Silverstein(쉘 실버스타인)의 The Giving Tree(아낌없이 주는 나무), Where the Sidewalk Ends(골목길이 끝나는 곳)이 선정되었씁니다. The True Story of the Three Little Pigs(늑대가 들려주는 아기돼지 삼형제 이야기)와 Piggie Pie는 그림책이지만 조금더 이해력이 발달되는 이때쯤 읽어주는 것이 더 좋을 것 같습니다.
초등학교 1,2학년이 되면 본격적으로 챕터북을 읽기 시작하는데 가장 대표적인 책중의 하나인 Junie B. Jones(주니비존스)와 100권이 넘는 미스터리 시리즈 The Boxcar Children가 교사와 학생들에게 꾸준히 사랑을 받고 잇습니다.
초등학교 3학년 정도에는 영작문의 바이블이라고하는 E.B. White(엘윈 브룩스 화이트)의 대표작 Charlotte’s Web(샬롯의 거미줄)과 기발한 상상력을 가진 Roald Dahl(로알드 달)의 책들, The BFG(내 친구 꼬마 거인), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory(찰리와 초콜릿 공장)을 즐겨 일게 되고, 대표적인 환타지소설인 나니아 연대기의 첫번째 책 The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe(사자, 마녀, 그리고 옷장)과 Harry Potter(해리포터)시리즈를 접하게 됩니다.
그리고 4-5학년에는 와 반지의 제왕으로 유명한 톨킨의 The Hobbit(호빗), 고전문학책 Little Women(작은아씨들), 그리고 미국의 대표적인 아동문학상인 뉴베리상 수상작 5권 - A Wrinkle in Time(시간의 주름), Dear Mr. Henshaw(헨쇼 선생님께), My Side of the Mountain(나의 산에서),Tuck Everlasting(트리갭의 선물), The Giver(기억전달자)- 이 공통으로 포함되어 있습니다.
조금 더 살펴보면, 교사들의 목록은 1. Charlotte’s Web, 2. Where the Wild Things Are, 3. The Giving Tree와 같이 고전 명작들부터 시작합니다. 교육적인 내용들이나 좋은 문장의 책들이 많고, 상대적으로 엄마나 선생님들이 읽어주기 좋은 책들이 많습니다. (Guess How Much I Love You, I Love You, Stinky Face, The Kissing Hand 등.. )
잔잔한 감동과 교훈을 주는 내용의 그림책들과 (The Little House(작은집이야기), 자기표현을 A Bad Case of Stripes, 세상을 아름답게 만들기 위해 노력하는 Miss Rumphius, 정직함과 진실됨의 가치를 알려주는 The Empty Pot 등. 특히 Leo Lionni(레오 리오니)의 Frederick 와 Swimmy, 캐빈 행키(Kevin Henkes)의 Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse와 Chrysanthemum은 서정적이고 섬세한 글로 어른들이 더 좋아하는 책입니다)
귀여운 캐릭터들이 등장하여 기발한 상상력을 보여주는그림책이 많습니다. 이에 비해 아이들의 목록에서는 첫번째가 Harry Potter(해리포터)이고, 두번째가 스콜라틱스에서 나온 공포소설 시리즈인 Goosebumps(구스범스)입니다. Pokemon(포켓몬)이나 Black Lagoon(블랙라군), The Adventures of Captain Underpants(캡틴 언더팬츠)등 조금더 자극적이고, 스스로 읽으면서 재미를 느낄 수 있는 책들이 많습니다.
그림책보다는 Amber Brown, Ramona, Nancy Drew Mystery Stories 같이 스스로 읽을 수 있는 챕터북이나 E.B. White(E.B. 화이트)의 Stuart Little과 The Trumpet of the Swan, Roald Dahl(로알드 달)의 Matilda, The Witches, James and the Giant Peach, Shel Silverstein(쉘 실버스타인)의 A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Judy Blume(주디 블룸) 의 Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing 과 같이 유명 작가의 비교적 쉽고 재미있는 소설들을 많이 선정했습니다.
